RFC - Simple Staking Filters

This is a Request for Comment regarding Simple Staking Filters

Simple Staking ( About | Source Code) is an online staking tool maintained and hosted by the xx Foundation. Simple Staking aims to make it easier for nominators who find manually staking and selecting validators cumbersome. Quite simply it selects 16 validators with the highest return for the nominator.

However, it does not take into consideration some circumstances or behaviors that some might consider to not be in the best interest of nominators or the xx network as a whole. Such as, not meeting the minimum validator staking requirement, commission adjustments that negatively affect nominators, running multiple cMixx nodes and/or gateways on one computer or from one location, etc.

xx Foundation is considering applying “filters” to Simple Staking which would result in Simple Staking not selecting validators which exhibit such behavior.

Below are a series of poll questions that ask about situations that may constitute behavior that is not in the best interest of nominators and/or the xx network as a whole. We would like to get a feel for how the xx network community views filtering validators from Simple Staking in the following situations.

:one: Validators that Block Nominations
Filter validators that …

  • … have blocked nominations in the past 30 days.
  • … have blocked nominations in the past 60 days.
  • … have blocked nominations in the past 90 days.
  • … have ever blocked nominations.

:two: Fair Commission

There is a filter that removes validators that have ever set their commission to 100%.

Should there also be a filter based on the validator’s current commission?

  • No.
  • Yes, 75%
  • Yes, 50%
  • Yes, 22%
  • Yes, other.

:three: Less than Minimum Validator Stake
Filter validators that currently self-stake less then 15,000 xx coins?

  • Yes
  • No

:four: Commission High Jinks

There have been and continue to be validators that change their commission frequently to maximize their commission until they lose too many nominators and can no longer get elected. At that point, they reduce their commission, wait to be elected and then incrementally increase their commission again until they lose nominators.

Filter validators that have …

  • … shown signs of high jinks in the past 30 days.
  • … shown signs of high jinks in the past 60 days.
  • … shown signs of high jinks in the past 90 days.
  • … ever shown signs of high jinks.

:five: Nodes With Duplicate or Gateways With Duplicate IP Addresses

When nodes or gateways do not have a unique IP address it suggests there is more than one node or more than one gateway running on the same computer or at the same location. In theory, if one of those nodes or gateways goes OFFLINE, all of the nodes or gateways at that location do as well.

Filter validators that run multiple cMixx nodes and/or gateways at the same location?

  • Yes
  • No

:six: Nodes With the Same IP Address as the Gateway

When a node and gateway have the same IP address it indicates the node and gateway are at the same location.

Filter validators whose node and gateway are at the same location?

  • Yes
  • No
