Grant Proposal: Ant Soccer on the XX Network

Date: 2024/12/3

Proposal Type: Development and Ecosystem Grant

Requested Grant Amount: 2 Million XX Coins

We are proposing a grant for participation in the creation of Ant Soccer, a blockchain-based competitive sports gaming platform which will be built in conjunction with the xx Network. Ant Soccer combines innovative gameplay, NFTs, and decentralized governance to create a unique sports ecosystem that offers players engaging competition, meaningful rewards, and decentralized ownership of digital assets.

To enhance the project’s success, we are requesting 2 Million XX Coins, allocated over clearly defined milestones, with a vesting schedule to guarantee transparency, accountability, and delivery. These funds will be used for development, marketing, infrastructure, community building, and growing the game ecosystem and in so doing, also the xx Network ecosystem.

Project Overview

Vision

Ant Soccer is not just a game—it’s the future of blockchain-powered competitive sports. By leveraging the xx Network, we aim to create a decentralized platform that combines:

  1. NFT-based Gameplay: Unique Ant characters with varying rarity, strengths and abilities.
  2. Competitive Leagues and Matches: Weekly leagues, real-time challenge matches, and tournaments.
  3. DAO Governance: A community-driven decision-making model for ecosystem growth.
  4. Sponsorship Opportunities: Partnerships with crypto and non-crypto entities to integrate branded leagues and in-game advertising.
  5. Player-Driven Economy: Meaningful rewards through league participation, NFT trading, and in-game purchases.

Challenges Addressed

Current blockchain sports games face:

  1. Limited Gameplay Variety: Few offer dynamic competitive sports mechanics.

Ant Game:

As I am not a technical individual, I am looking at this more from a business perspective and the possible upside. By no means am I discounting the potential challenges. Since this is an initial start-up and just getting started…imo workable. Here is my 2 cents:

I believe this to be a unique opportunity for our network. Ant Soccer could be more than just a blockchain game—it’s a chance for the xx network to take center stage in a rapidly growing and highly engaging industry. Soccer, with its universal appeal, and gaming, with its explosive growth, create a unique and timely opportunity. This project has the potential to energize our community, attract new users, and showcase the xx network as a leader in innovation. By thoughtfully addressing technical challenges and aligning goals, Ant Soccer can set the stage for a broader gaming and NFT ecosystem on xx. I think this could be a strategic opportunity for us and here is why I think this matters—and how we can make it work.

  1. Business Potential:
    • Monetization: In-game transactions, sponsorships, and NFTs will generate revenue streams tied directly to xx coins.
    • Marketing Impact: Soccer’s global appeal and gaming’s growth can create massive exposure for xx in Europe and beyond.
    • Community Excitement: A soccer-themed blockchain game would rally excitement and participation from within the xx community, giving members a flagship project to champion.
  2. Market Synergy:
    • Growing Sector: Gaming and NFTs are booming, perfectly aligning with xx’s goal of expanding its use cases.
    • Target Demographics: Soccer fans and gamers overlap with tech-savvy, blockchain-aware users, ensuring a strong potential user base.
  3. NFT Ecosystem Catalyst:
    • Introduces NFTs as a cornerstone for new projects, showcasing xx’s potential quantum-resistant, privacy-first technology.
    • Establishes a foundation for future NFT and gaming projects, driving long-term ecosystem growth.
    • There are endless possibilities having something like this built within our ecosystem. And it just friggin massive overall!

Addressing Concerns

  1. Technical Challenges:
    • NFT Marketplace: While xx doesn’t yet have a marketplace, Ant Soccer could integrate with platforms like UNIQUE short-term while xx builds its own.
    • On-Chain Identity: Fixing gaps (e.g., Discord IDs, Haven ID) would not only help Ant Soccer but strengthen xx’s broader ecosystem for DAOs and identity verification.
    • Outdated Libraries: Ant Soccer’s collaboration with xx on modernizing libraries could leave the network better equipped for future projects.
    • Ant Dev: My main concern is more to do with whom they use and how committed they are.
  2. Funding Structure:
    • Implement milestone-based funding with clear deliverables tied to xx goals (e.g., NFT marketplace integration, game mechanics development).
    • Use vesting schedules to ensure long-term commitment and progress.
  3. Risk Mitigation:
    • Require exclusivity agreements tying Ant Soccer to xx for a defined period.
    • Tie funding to network growth metrics like xx coin adoption in-game, wallet creation, and community engagement.
  4. Funding and Coin Volume Tied to Price:
    • Given the current market conditions, the funding amount should be adaptive to the price of xx coins. If the coin value increases, the total coin volume allocated to the project could be reduced proportionally to maintain funding value without diluting xx’s token economy.

Benefits for xx Network

  1. Monetization:
    • Adds new revenue streams through league fees, NFT sales, and sponsorships tied to xx coins.
    • Creates economic activity directly tied to xx coins, boosting utility and value.
  2. Ecosystem Growth:
    • Attracts new users, including gamers and soccer fans, broadening xx’s reach.
    • Builds xx’s reputation as a go-to platform for gaming and NFT projects.
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Builds excitement within the xx network community, fostering pride and ownership in a high-profile project.
    • Encourages community involvement through development updates, beta testing, and even NFT creation contests.
  4. Marketing & Exposure:
    • Leverages soccer’s universal popularity to position xx in global markets.
    • Demonstrates xx’s ability to support innovative, high-profile projects.
  5. Infrastructure Improvements:
    • Justifies investments in long-term solutions like an NFT marketplace, on-chain identity, and improved library support.
    • Positions xx to attract future gaming and NFT projects.

Strategic Enhancements

  1. Broader Ecosystem Vision:
    • Position Ant Soccer as a catalyst for a broader xx gaming and NFT ecosystem, inspiring future projects and partnerships.
  2. Community Involvement:
    • Engage the community through contests, beta testing, and governance voting to create excitement and long-term engagement.
    • Consider community-led fundraising (e.g., NFT pre-sales or staking campaigns) to align the community’s success with the project’s growth.
  3. Hybrid DAO Models:
    • Use off-chain governance initially while xx develops on-chain solutions, leveraging xx’s existing governance tools creatively.
  4. Marketing Alliances:
    • Collaborate with Ant Soccer to promote xx within gaming and soccer communities.
    • Explore sponsorship opportunities tied to soccer leagues or esports for additional exposure.
  5. Sustainability Focus:
    • Highlight xx’s environmentally conscious blockchain design to appeal to eco-conscious gamers and developers.

Recommendations

  1. Refine Proposal:
    • Ant Soccer must deliver detailed technical plans, a roadmap, and milestones addressing xx’s gaps (e.g., NFT marketplace, identity support).
    • Break milestones into smaller deliverables to minimize risk and ensure steady progress.
  2. Business Alignment:
    • Secure agreements tying Ant Soccer’s success to xx (e.g., token stakes, revenue sharing).
    • Focus on integrating xx-specific features like NFTs, Proxxy, and cMix.
  3. Adaptive Funding:
    • Structure funding to adjust based on xx coin price, ensuring value remains consistent while protecting xx’s token economy.

IMO Ant Soccer represents a significant opportunity to position xx as a leader in blockchain gaming and NFTs. It combines strong business potential, marketing exposure, and the ability to engage and energize the community. By tying funding amounts to the coin price and addressing technical challenges, we can ensure a sustainable, impactful collaboration that benefits everyone in the xx ecosystem. This is an opportunity to make it part of our growth strategy and expand the network in an extremely interactive and positive manner.

I like the idea overall, but think there are platforms more suitable for this than xx Chain.

Suggestions:

  • Make use of cMixx, not xx Chain
    • Idea for desktop app: Settings > Privacy > Prefer mixnet for own “in” and “out” transactions. users who deploy Proxxy could enable it for better privacy. Fallback for users who don’t have it can be to clearnnet (since it’s “prefer”). If you make it “require”, then only cMixx would be acceptable as transport. There’s relay code which I may be usable directly from the app
    • DEX integration: I wonder if the relay could be used from mobile and desktop app to protect privacy when buying/selling NFTs on a DEX
  • Use another Substrate chain instead of xx Chain
    • xx Chain has assets and NFTs, but the main use case for xx Network isn’t assets/NFTs, and those palletes are not “latest & greatest”
    • Governance-related modules are also not “latest & greatest” that you can get from Substrate chains that heavily focus on governance
    • xx Network wallet does not seem to have NFT-related UI features in the wallet as that’s hasn’t been a use case for xx Network

While xx Chain could be updated with latest and greatest, it would be an effort for just one app, require regular chain updates, and maybe even new features that should be implemented upstream rather than on xx Chain and then have someone having to create PRs for upstream and follow up on them.

I like the idea and I suggest this would be better value for Ant Soccer:

  • Use a Polkadot SDK-based chain (e.g. Kusama or Polkadot). You get all the latest governance and NFT features as well as a working DEX
    • If you use cMixx and want to enable DM chat over cMix, that can be done and cMixx ID could be stored in Polkadot on-chain identity
  • Use cMixx features for added privacy (Preferred (with fallback to clearnet) or Required (no fallback) use of Proxxy/cMixx in general
  • Apply for one grant on each platform (e.g. >80% on Polkadot, <20% on xx Network since cMixx would be a minor, but important feature)

That would also be better value for xx Network:

  • Makes use of cMixx, the key service of xx Network
  • Doesn’t require more frequent and significant xx Chain engineering/updates than normal, allowing xx Network developers to focus on priority use cases
  • With a Substrate-based (i.e. Polkadot SDK-based) chain and wallet (with access to xx coin), Ant Soccer could create additional integrations with xx Chain down the road

Please find my comments below:

Although, I see the potential of this project. I also think the development of the game should be clearly separated from the xx integration part. The xx Grant should only cover the xx integration efforts, which will need to be open sourced.

In this regards, Milestone 1 should be the basis to apply for the grant rather than a milestone. Moreover, for it to make sense, there should be a clearer explanation of the game dynamics, and of why and where xx network brings a unique added value to this game dynamics. They should spend more time in explaining how exactly they plan to use the unique features of xx network to actually “improve” the game. Eg. For which “data” transfers they plan to use cmix and why is this important? What is the mTPS (messaging transaction per second) they need? Do they plan to implement postage? For which actions xx are required and to whom are these xx paid? Will there be just xx or other cryptocurrencies involved?

Finally they should prove that they have secured funding (or can bootstrap) the development of the game part, and/or have a conditional on deliverables that cannot trigger xx grant milestones when other required milestones are not completed yet.

I don’t wannas see another memefi.
Go to ant soccer Twitter. There are small followers.
It won’t work.
Don’t forget this project that provides privacy and quantum security…
Such “NFT based” advertising feels like it detracts from the true essence of the xx network.
Is this the best…?

We are a startup project and like every startup project, it takes time for the community to form and the project to mature. We recommend that you take a look at our Twitter account now. Our goal is to contribute to the development of the ecosystem by using the XX ecosystem. You will have the chance to earn xx and/or asg tokens by making purchases for the game with xx coins in the game. Before examining the project, it is necessary to see its potential and what it will bring.

As it is known, there are many projects in the market that use their own ecosystems, one of them is the xx ecosystem, but there are no altcoins that use the perfect technology of xx, while there are sub-projects that use other ecosystems, no one understands the value of the xx ecosystem. I am an xx investor before, I chose xx for the development of this ecosystem, many ecosystems have grant programs, we did not apply to them, and with this game, you will have to spend your xx in the game and buy xx coins again, please visit our website

Just the day before, ant soccer game had 133 followers.
It looks like they are using bot farm services from developing countries like memefi to increase their followers.
Council members, you should never vote to let this pass.
It’s very strange. I think there’s something wrong with this.
To be honest, it’s weird that they even applied for a grant for this.
There’s something very strange about this. This should be voted down.

There’s no need to overthink this (who they are, what they’re up to, etc.). Of course, they don’t have many followers when there’s nothing to use (yet). Even if the followers are fake, I don’t care.

Anyone who gets a grant has to deliver a detailed proposal before anything begins to happen (such as a council vote).

Then the grant is voted on and may be just a partial amount depending on the quality, scope, etc.

Then nothing is paid until working code is delivered in stages.

Then after the whole thing is delivered, the grant is paid in full.

Grants don’t get paid for some future success of the applicant. As useful deliverables (mostly code) get delivered, XX tokens get paid out. That’s it. We don’t need to guess whether they’ll make 0 or 1 million XX from services contained in the grant application.

Risks are managed and small. Even if the project never gets completed, grant deliverables are by (grant) design meant to be reused by other builders on xx Chain/xx Network.

I only think other Substrate chains are more suitable for NFT-related development and the grant doesn’t make use of the key tech of xx Network, cMixx, which is why I’d like to see a smaller grant for cMixx-specific features if the project can make use of cMixx. If there’s no use case for cMixx, I am not concerned about the plan as such, but I don’t find xx Chain integrations valuable because such code won’t find much reuse and xx Chain doesn’t have some key related features which will make it less likely that the project succeeds.

I see pros and cons, would be cool to see how this all comes together overall and if it can attract more people to understand the potential of xx. People like games so this is the opportunity it may have to do just that. Is this the best game/company to start with? but at the same time, are there any other proposals coming in? probably not, so I like this idea and where it may go.

Ant Soccer is currently on public sale through Launchpad.
If our grants are intended to benefit Ant Soccer’s seed investors and public investors, that’s fine…
but if not, I think we should provide grants to developers who understand cmixx and develop dapps on the xx blockchain.

I had made some private comments, and a few folks have already touched on similar points, but I think it makes sense to repeat some of the things I said here:

  1. This is asking us to fund the entire development of their project with no equity for 2MXX. By comparison, the bounties we are issuing are topping out at 1-1.5 MXX which are intended to directly advance network goals. This sets a bad precedent as the only network benefit here is “more usage on the network” supposedly, but anything they build can be trivially ported to another network on a whim. That said, the milestones are not terrible with the first being .3 MXX.
  2. The payouts themselves are bulk and appear to assume immediate spend, whereas everything to date has been set up as linear vest for 3-18 months. Another bad precedent.
  3. We do not have an NFT marketplace in place for folks to buy and sell. They would need to build this, and it is a non-trivial tool, so they would need to identify an existing project they can fork to even make this proposal viable in my view.
  4. It will require writing extrinsics to manage the nfts using what may be an outdated library, seeing as we haven’t made updates to the pallets in quite a while. To my knowledge we are just using the existing pallet and haven’t developed anything here. This means development will take longer.
  5. The proposal itself is missing technical depth into how the game will actually work. I’d want to see a UX walkthrough or a description of the main screens to understand how folks would play the game.
  6. The DAO is similarly missing technical depth. How will they build it? We do not have contract support so there is no way for them to do a DAO with a smart contract. A DAO contract would have to be implemented on ASTAR, Moonbeam, or Aleph, but they don’t really point to a specific DAO model or code they will fork. Another significant undertaking that is not well defined.

Lastly, I’d really like folks to consider how this proposal commits them to the xx network.

In terms of moving forward, I feel they would be much better served deploying on UNIQUE. UNIQUE has significantly better NFT support, with a marketplace and libraries that make it much easier to implement what is presented here. What would make more sense is for xx network to support messaging of their application, and maybe implementing a nft issuance via xx network as well and potentially using xx to play the game depending on the specifics of their UX.

I’d be willing to help them with UNIQUE, a hackathon team I am working with is already using them and they have a whole codebase to mint and deploy their collections which I can just give them as it will be open source.

I do not really have a good answer on what an xx integration should look like, but there’s some ideas, to summarize:

  1. Very direct interface to send transactions over xx network to interact with unique nft api.
  2. You play ant soccer on xx network, and build a referee that issues the nfts.
  3. ant soccer chat supported by xx network
1 Like

By the way, the W3 Foundation just decided to burn more money on NFTs.

This is just getting started so UNIQUE and/or NFTMozaic could be good places to get funding in early 2025 when this gets going.

https://nftmozaic.com/

If NFTs on Polkadot SDK-based chains become more promising, we could consider updating our NFT components as well, but I’m a bit skeptical about NFTs being a distraction for our chain.

It doesn’t make sense to pay for a project that is neither developing an NFT DApp within the xx network chain nor directly related to it.
This seems like a new project raising development funds through something like a BSC launchpad.

Since this is an external project conducting an ICO, the entire proposal from Milestone 1 to Milestone 4 is unreasonable. If the project is already securing initial funding externally to create gameplay, demos, and promotional videos, why should xx network provide funding? This is far beyond what I consider common sense, and I find it incomprehensible.

The milestones are meant to benefit $ASG token holders, not xx network. Proposals like this could be considered underhanded agreements or deceptive practices in the VC investment ecosystem.

I am against this proposal.

What I’m curious about is whether this grants will be given to $ASG.
Has the decision to provide the grants already been made?

If it was made it would have been announced.

Or, even if no announcement came out (unpossible), it can’t happen for another obvious reason which is that no Council or other vote occurred…

If/when [1] it does, watch out who votes how and vote (for Council members) accordingly …

[1] “If” because this Council motion may not even be submitted if, for example, the applicant decides to submit a smaller scope application, or it is estimated within the council that the chances of a the funding motion passing are very low.
