Does a node need public Internet access if the gateway has this?

I followed the node handbook v1.5 and it states:

Gateways: The public facing components of Nodes, one exists per Node. They store received messages and provide public access to data.

So after setting up the node and gateway on the same server and using 0.0.0.0 for the node IP in the gateway configuration, I closed off the node (port 11420) from the Internet, thinking the gateway will provide public access.

Then fortunately, I noticed on the dashboard that my node was online, but only getting timeouts since the moment I closed the port. So I opened it up again and it is showing success again.

Is my configuration wrong or is this intended behaviour?

Currently the nodes are exposed and the gateways are not the only public facing machines. This should change in future.
