For which networks have you ever operated a node?
What kind of improvements would you like to see in xx network nodes vs. previous nodes you have supported? I am not in a position to suggest improvements at this point since this will be the first node that I operate.
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an xx network node? Perhaps the initial set up, but I don't think this should be a problem. I read through the node installation guide, and it seems pretty detailed and clear. I also have access to some people that can help if I need it.
What is the maximum upload bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 750
What is the maximum download bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 750
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? 98
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. $0.10/kWh
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator?` 4
In what type of environment would this server be located? Personal Home
If your server is located in your personal home, please specify the name of your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Telus
If your server is located in a Datacenter, please specify the name of the company hosting it. Nodes will not be allowed to run on Hetzner. If you do, you will not receive compensation. Does not apply. I will be running in my home.
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? No
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published xx network BetaNet Node specifications (found here)? My graphics card is a RTX 3070, and my cpu is a Ryzen 3900x. I also have a samsung 2TB nvme drive and 32 GB RAM.
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: No.
Why do you want to be a node? I want to play an active part in a crypto project. I think that the xx network can provide services that will actually be useful for humanity (like the private messenger). The 7000 coins a month are nice as well!
How did you originally hear about the xx network? Word of Mouth
Which current xx network communities are you a member of?
    • Discord
Are you an active member of those communities? No
What specifically, interests you about the xx network platform? The privacy aspect. Specifically the ability to hide metadata for completely private communications. I haven't seen this technology in any other messenger projects. I also am interested in this project because of the reputation of David Chaum. Having him lead this project really brings a lot of credibility to the xx network.
Outside of xx network communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? No.
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? No.
Do you have past experience managing communities or creating content to be distributed across social media? Please enter details for all with which you are comfortable or have experience:
As part of growing the xx network community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an xx network BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. No
Would you be interested in helping to lead the development of the next xx network community? No
Why do you want to run a node in the xx network
      • To protect the privacy of political speech
      • To protect private personal communication around health and lifestyle issues from mass surveillance and abuse by centralized organizations
      • To promote quantum secure distributed systems
      • To earn xx coins
      • To help build David Chaum's vision of a decentralized world
      • To contribute to a promising project
      • To undo the centralization of the internet by big tech companies
      • To help build true digital cash to fuel a decentralized economy
      • To reverse the political centralization of legal, police, and military organizations which favor the wealthy and powerful
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? As I understand it, distribution has to do with the geographical locations of the components of the network. In a distributed network, the computers/members of the network are spread out in different places. This helps protect against a disaster affecting all the network at once. Decentralization has to do with the governance of the network. Does a single entity run the network or not? For example, Facebook has servers all over the world but at the top decisions are made by Mark Zukerberg. Facebook would thus be a centralized, but distributed network.
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the xx network platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. A few things stand out: the cMix protocol seems to be unique when it comes to privacy applications, and the fact that the chain is quantum resistant means that the network should be around for a long time (since it won't be affected by the inevitable rise of quantum computers). Also, having David Chaum's name attached to the project certainly brings some value.
Privacy by Default is a goal of the xx network Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? I don't believe you can have a free society without also having privacy. Without an ability to communicate privately, you have to worry that your every word could be intercepted and used for some kind of nefarious purpose. Even if you have "nothing to hide", your communications could be monitized in some way, without your explicit consent. A lack of privacy could also bring more serious consequences like having your life insurance application denied because you mentioned the word "cancer" in your recent communications (but maybe you were actually just talking about constellations!).
In your opinion, what threat, if any, do quantum computers pose toward decentralized systems? What about centralized systems? I don't think that quantum computers would affect centralized networks more or less than decentralized networks. Quantum computers could break the encryption that is used to safeguard most blockchains like bitcoin, but also transactions withing centralized networks (for example, logging into your bank account). This is a problem!
