What is your occupation? Privacy/Security
Non-technical Role or Other (please specify)
How many years experience in your field? 8-15
What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? Bachelor’s degree (for example: BA. BS)

For which networks have you ever operated a node?
  • Ethereum (ETH, ETC, etc)
  • Monero
  • Other (please specify): CertiK, NEAR, Cardano, Elrond, Nym, HOPR, Flow
What kind of improvements would you like to see in xx network nodes vs. previous nodes you have supported? Automations on rolling upgrades and mitigations. I think it will be relatively easy to program in automatic testing and updates which operators can opt in to. This helps in delivering security patches to the network. NEAR's Betanet `nearup` is somehow working on this.
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an xx network node? Too high a stake amount to be a validator. In many projects the network becomes centralized. I know it's a difficult problem to solve, where the "rich gets richer."
What is the maximum upload bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 1024
What is the maximum download bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 1024
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? 100
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. 0.3 EUR/kWh
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator?` 100
In what type of environment would this server be located? Datacenter
If your server is located in your personal home, please specify the name of your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If your server is located in a Datacenter, please specify the name of the company hosting it. Hetzner
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? We have many years of experience maintaining servers in Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Hetzner, and others. From web and general Linux servers to VPNs, and this year, blockchain nodes.
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published xx network BetaNet Node specifications (found here)? https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/gpus
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: We only run in datacenters. It won't be a problem to spin up machines with GPU on GCP and AWS. For now all our other nodes only require CPU. But we can get GPUs as needed for xx.
Why do you want to be a node? Take part in building the digital future. Earn for the future of our kids.
How did you originally hear about the xx network? Word of Mouth
Which current xx network communities are you a member of?
  • Discord
Are you an active member of those communities? No
What specifically, interests you about the xx network platform? David Chaum and quantum computing resistance.
Outside of xx network communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? Yes. We are community guild leaders for NEAR Protocol Philippines. Also member of the private NEAR Betanet Analysis Group. Active in CertiK genesis validators group.
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? The Cardano conference this year.
Do you have past experience managing communities or creating content to be distributed across social media? Please enter details for all with which you are comfortable or have experience:
  • Group messaging curation / management (telegram, whatsapp, etc): Now maintaining NEAR Philippines social media presence: Facebook, Twitter, Telegram.
As part of growing the xx network community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an xx network BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. One technical article. I like creating how-to's.
Would you be interested in helping to lead the development of the next xx network community? Yes
Why do you want to run a node in the xx network
  • To protect private personal communication around health and lifestyle issues from mass surveillance and abuse by centralized organizations
  • To promote quantum secure distributed systems
  • To earn xx coins
  • To help build David Chaum's vision of a decentralized world
  • To contribute to a promising project
  • To help build true digital cash to fuel a decentralized economy
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? The real meaning of a decentralized network should be that network governance and execution is not controlled by a few influential entities. Distributed networks have physically distributed operations for high availability, but they are controlled by an entity (i.e. internet companies). I'd love to see a truly decentralized network. It will be a true achievement but one that's difficult to design. (Good read: https://cointelegraph.com/news/the-word-decentralized-has-lost-all-meaning-enough-is-enough) Although I also have no objection to companies with products that will use blockchain (i.e. Binance Chain, CertiK Chain). They have the right to control their product and chain. They should just not hand a claim to decentralization.
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the xx network platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. True decentralization, linear scaling, and quantum future-proofing of the xxBFT consensus algorithm.
Privacy by Default is a goal of the xx network Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? Information is control and influence. He who has better intelligence in a war will usually win it. Big companies may know parts of us better than we know ourselves. This can be used to manipulate people, either for money, or for control.
In your opinion, what threat, if any, do quantum computers pose toward decentralized systems? What about centralized systems? Quantum computing may break certain cryptography that was not designed to be resistant to it. This is big, for it affects not only blockchain, but cryptography as a whole. But I'm sure that systems will adapt and try to mitigate the threat, as Ethereum 2.0 has already done. But the largest threat, is if a working quantum computer has been produced but has not been announced. If that would be true, then we are all sitting ducks. That's why it is good to have these quantum-resistant systems to be in place now.

Why would you run a node outside of your geo location?

Looks great but I also don’t understand why you choose to run in Falkenstein (Hetzner).
Must be cheaper / easier to run somewhere in Asia, or not?

I say yes

Good day! This is our application. Now for answers to the questions on why we run outside our geo location:

Philippines is a developing country. The only datacenter services we have are for large telecom corporations and not as readily accessible to the public compared to cloud providers.

Yes, Hetzner is cheaper, but also performant. Yet we are not tied down to it. After rechecking the specs and familiarizing ourselves with the xx network, it seems more likely that we should go with another provider, maybe AWS or Digital Ocean.

If the community has recommendations on which geo location we should run for distribution’s sake, we will gladly consider it. We previously ran servers in Tokyo, Singapore, and Taiwan. (Although our area has never been tectonically stable.)

Nice to have a applicant in the filipinos but a GPU is required.

Friendly reminder: keep your word please and run your node at home.If you are planning to place it in a datacentre without GPU, it won’t work. So think about it.

We would like to thank the team for shortlisting us in the initial selection. We will now prepare for the specs and GPUs required to run the nodes. And we will be happy to address any inquiries you may have.

Please keep safe!

We’d like to confirm that we now have setup the necessary hardware to run an xx node. :grinning: Looking forward to actually run a node in it.
