What kind of improvements would you like to see in xx network nodes vs. previous nodes you have supported? The use of friendlier environment components in which the node works (language environment, the use of ready-made solutions like docker can have a positive or negative effect, depending on the case). The ability to work with transactions without using a graphical (desktop or browser) interface, support for all functionality in the terminal in general (this is not always available in other projects). The rest of the requirements relate more to the network than to the node as an entity with which I work directly.
What are potential setbacks preventing you from operating an xx network node? In general, none
What is the maximum upload bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 1000
What is the maximum download bandwidth in megabits per second your node can provide? 1000
What is a reasonable uptime estimate you can provide for your BetaNet node? 99
Please estimate the cost of electricity in the geographic area where your BetaNet node will be running. 0.04$/kwh
On a monthly basis, how much time can you publicly commit to dedicating toward governance if you were selected as a BetaNet node operator?` 50
In what type of environment would this server be located? Datacenter
If your server is located in your personal home, please specify the name of your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If your server is located in a Datacenter, please specify the name of the company hosting it.
Do you have past experience deploying hardware servers in a datacenter? ordered dedicated server colocation previously
Do you already own sufficient hardware to meet the published xx network BetaNet Node specifications (found here)? No
Do you have hardware you would like to use but does not meet the stated BetaNet node specs? If so, please provide specs on that hardware below: No home or other hardware i would use currently, if application will be approved, will order appropriate hardware as soon as possible
Why do you want to be a node? Because when xx will become more widespread, it would be in my interests if this significant and wider object will be more democratic, resistant to malicious actions regarding its control. I can participate in this on my own to some extent.
How did you originally hear about the xx network? Newsletter
Which current xx network communities are you a member of?
  • Telegram
  • BetaNet Forum
Are you an active member of those communities? No
What specifically, interests you about the xx network platform? first wide private messaging protocol
Outside of xx network communities, are you an active participant in other node or developer community groups? If so, which ones? Mostly active in Cyber (decentralized search on Cosmos)
Have you ever attended a blockchain conference? If so, which one(s)? No
Do you have past experience managing communities or creating content to be distributed across social media? Please enter details for all with which you are comfortable or have experience:
  • Meetup group management: no experience, but probably can help manage small group locally
As part of growing the xx network community, are you willing to create content as part of operating an xx network BetaNet node? Examples would be node setup & on-boarding review vlog post, bi-weekly twitter update, medium review of on-going node operational process, etc. 2-3
Would you be interested in helping to lead the development of the next xx network community? Yes
Why do you want to run a node in the xx network
  • To protect the privacy of political speech
  • To protect private personal communication around health and lifestyle issues from mass surveillance and abuse by centralized organizations
  • To earn xx coins
  • To contribute to a promising project
  • To help build true digital cash to fuel a decentralized economy
What is the difference between decentralized networks and distributed networks, and where on the decentralization spectrum do you sit? Distributed refers to distribution category (in the network - location of agents). Decentralized - to the absence of a central controlling entity (in the network - the controlling center). On this spectrum, I consider Bitcoin and some other networks quite "decentralized", since I accept the complexity of establishing such systems in the real world and use definitions less rigidly (I adhere to a formal understanding of them).
As best as you can given currently available information, please describe the value proposition of the xx network platform and how it differs from other current blockchain solutions. Unique setup of privacy tools and sufficient consensus work
Privacy by Default is a goal of the xx network Platform. In your opinion, why is Privacy by Default critical for the future of the internet? Critical becuase the role of how information is managed by people online will be more evolving. Important to give people opportunity to have a privacy by default without so hard setup. The trend towards a decrease in violence in society will make it so that the main control will be the control of access to information from the point of view of the mass user. This will be a more sensitive aspect.
In your opinion, what threat, if any, do quantum computers pose toward decentralized systems? What about centralized systems?

Can you use a GPU (2070/2080 or more recent nvidia card) in your datacenter ?
Have you checked ?

Indeed… GPU’s in data centers are very expensive and very difficult to find… However if you can deploy your own physical server then it is great - he mentioned collocation so should be fine. Lots of great applications … lots of passionate people.

I like this application, but there are open questions:

  • You state that you would locate the node in a data centre, but do not state in which data centre,
  • You state that you will order appropriate hardware if application is approved. Does that mean you will order a package from your data centre of choice, or that you build the node yourself for collocation in that data centre?
  • Please also answer the last questions on quantum computing.

LOTS OF PASSIONATE PEOPLE?? How do you know if you are just 3 days on the forum?
They want to run a node with only a CPU.
That won’t work. And it states clearly that a GPU IS REQUIRED.

Comment was in general - I dont have stats to know what is the percentage of applicants who actually deliver according to specs however I would think it is a majority.
I assume that someone who buys hardware for collocation can also add a GPU as per specs…
In general based on applications and user profiles I do see lots of passionate and technical people - as a community - that is expected.
If someone would say hosting in a virtual environment then indeed GPU is 99% not.
In regard to this application indeed GPU is a must therefore waiting for full specs.
You assume that ALL applications that use collocation will not have a GPU ? In this case also ALL applications that dont use a personal server - non data center for sure wont have a GPU as it is even ore expensive… Therefore the app should clearly state that we prefer non data center / not allow data centers/assume or really press with spec questions and GPU to make sure the applicant can double check and come back confirming GPU availability or alternative hosting.
Marc has already followed up with some targeted questions.
I am pretty sure some people also miss the GPU during the application - either because you take time to answer in detail or just miss it… Or just because you are committed to buy what is needed anyway.
I personally think that it would be helpful to explain some things during the app process - maybe 3 checkboxes:

  1. Preffered - personal/home/non data center - ( GPU GTX 2070 or above required -= make sure internet is ok)
  2. data center VPS (virtual private server) - very expensive and difficult to find GPU and crypto friendly so pls check GPU availability
  3. data center collocation - if you bring your own computer you will need to make sure it also has a supported GPU

At least this way some critical areas are addressed at the very first steps and will allow applicants to reconsider options as needed… Not everyone knows all GPU data center pricing for example - so addressing the GPU requirement early in the process will help.
How many days I am “active” is irrelevant obviously.
More feedback the better. If I miss the GPU question on one app someone else can ask it etc.
There will be some applicants that will answer or some that will not etc.

The missed the question in the application?

Then a lot of people filled the application in less then 10minutes. That doesn’t show commitment to the project. I assume that you reviewed other applications as well? Because that is the purpose of a community.

It is everybody’s own responsibility how they fill in the application though.
The end result will show if people lied with their consequences.
